Suryoye Theological Seminary Salzburg supports

Our History

2011

The Syrian Orthodox Patriarch sends a delegation to Salzburg and asks the Archdiocese of Salzburg and the Faculty of Theology of the University of Salzburg for support for a student house and study opportunities in Syriac Theology.

2012

At the request of the former Archbishop of Salzburg, Dr. Alois Kothgasser, the Archdiocese of Salzburg buys a listed building in the heart of Salzburg.  This was offered to the Archdiocese by the governor of Salzburg, Dr. Ing. Wilfried Haslauer, in solidarity for the purpose of Syriac studies.

2013

Founding of the Suryoye Theological Seminary Salzburg (STSS) for the financing of the student house Beth Suryoye. STSS members come from the Syrian Orthodox Church in Europe and the USA. Since 2015 they have enabled 29 students to study in Salzburg and have secured the financing of the operating costs for Beth Suryoye.

2015

The Archdiocese of Salzburg provides the house for the Syrian Orthodox Church, which it takes over as Beth Suryoye. Opening of Beth Suryoye on 12th October 2015 in a ceremony when the keys are handed over from Archbishop Dr Franz Lackner to Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II. The first students move in in October 2015.

2016 to 2018

Renovation and adaptation of the student house, Beth Suryoye enabled by the Archdiocese of Salzburg, with the support of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Austria, represented by Cardinal Christoph Schönborn. Renovations are completed by July 2018.
